RailWorks

RailWorks is a specialized railway simulation module for FlexSim developed by EYF to simplify the creation of detailed railway models. It combines dedicated 3D railway objects with FlexSim Process Flow capabilities, enabling users to build and visualize rail networks while controlling train movements and railway events through dedicated logic.

Tracks can be connected through proximity to create the network, allowing trains to navigate between defined destinations without requiring users to manually configure every movement segment.

The RailWorks library supports detailed railway processes including train movement, material transportation, loading and unloading, refueling, coupling and decoupling, and yard management.

Dedicated railway objects and Process Flow activities account for variables such as train weight, volume, material quantities, processing times, routes, and resource constraints, providing the flexibility required to represent complex railway systems while reducing the amount of custom development needed to build the model.

From railway data to validated scenarios

RailWorks provides a structured workflow for building detailed railway models in FlexSim, configuring railway-specific logic, evaluating alternative scenarios, and analyzing performance indicators to support planning and investment decisions.

Native integration with FlexSim

RailWorks works directly within the FlexSim environment, extending its native modeling capabilities with railway-specific objects, logic, and Process Flow activities.

Users can build railway networks, configure trains, yards, terminals, signaling, routing, loading and unloading processes, and control railway events without leaving the FlexSim ecosystem.

Because RailWorks is integrated with native FlexSim objects and Process Flow, railway models can combine standard FlexSim resources with dedicated RailWorks components, supporting both new projects and existing models.

Integration capabilities include:
  • Native FlexSim 3D environment
  • Dedicated railway objects
  • Railway-specific Process Flow activities
  • Integration with standard FlexSim objects
  • Custom routing and movement logic
  • Loading, unloading, coupling, and decoupling events
  • Signaling and headway analysis
  • GIS-based railway modeling
What this enables:
  • Faster railway model development
  • Greater flexibility for custom logic
  • Detailed representation of railway processes
  • Integration with broader logistics and industrial systems
  • Reuse of existing FlexSim models and resources

RailWorks' specialized railway capabilities

Specialized 3D railway objects

RailWorks extends the FlexSim 3D library with dedicated objects for tracks, signaling, locomotives, wagons, stations, control points, cranes, and other railway elements. These objects include railway-specific properties and behaviors, reducing the need to develop fundamental rail logic from scratch.

Rails and Curved Rails · Signalized Rails · Locomotives and Wagons · Rail Control Points · Stations · Rail Cranes · GIS Portal

Railway-specific Process Flow

RailWorks adds custom Process Flow activities for creating and moving trains and wagons, defining destinations, managing consists, and controlling railway-specific events. Combine these activities with standard FlexSim logic to build customized railway workflows.

Train and wagon movement · Coupling and decoupling · Loading and unloading · Refueling · Crane operations · GIS Portal integration

Advanced headway analysis

Use Rail Control Points to capture train timestamps at strategic locations and evaluate spacing between trains across the network. RailWorks organizes this information into detailed outputs and interactive headway graphs for analyzing railway traffic behavior and capacity.

Train spacing · Minimum headway · Checkpoint data · Track capacity · Interactive headway graphs

Railway dashboards

RailWorks includes dedicated dashboard components that extend FlexSim’s visualization capabilities with railway-specific information. Monitor model behavior and analyze relevant indicators directly within the simulation environment.

Train data · Railway events · Model outputs · Performance indicators

Rail Network & RailwayTimetable

RailWorks provides dedicated tools to create and connect railway infrastructure while RailwayTimetable automatically records events generated throughout the simulation. Build complex rail networks and maintain a structured history of train movements and activities for detailed analysis.

Tracks and connections · Junctions and routes · Stations · Train arrivals and departures · Loading and unloading · Refueling · Coupling and decoupling · Event timestamps
