When planning the expansion of its steel coil yard, the company identified the need for solutions that could help define a new operational plan. To this end, the company partnered with EYF to conduct accurate analyses of changes in yard rules, resources and layout, enabling the creation of a solution that would optimize the efficiency of the future expansion.

Implemented Solutions:

The project involved several stages, from data collection to the development of solutions that would enable more efficient operational planning. This process included the representation of the current system (“As is”), the planning of future scenarios and the creation of a final report to guide strategic decisions.

To ensure the accuracy of the analyses, data was collected at specific stages of the process, detailing operational times and providing a clear view of internal flows. This analysis served as the basis for the digital planning of future operations and provided a deeper understanding of coil yard operations.

After analyzing the current state, the EYF team focused its efforts on planning future scenarios related to the expansion of the coil yard. The solution allowed testing several variables, such as truck routing, the location of the new unloading bay, the number of operators, and the efficiency of the overhead cranes. The main results of the project include:

  • Potential increase in production by 58.6%, optimizing operations.
  • Reduction in waiting times at the reception by 58.0%, minimizing idle time.
  • Strategic definition of the location of the new unloading bay.
  • Creation of optimized logic for coil storage and unloading process.
  • Determination of the ideal number of operators for the stripping process.
  • Reduction of unnecessary coil movements through routing strategies.

Impact:

Digital planning has enabled the company to identify key opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs in the coil yard. The data-driven approach has facilitated strategic decision-making, allowing for informed and effective choices for expansion.
